Note:
This garden bed was designed for three different usage . If you wish, you can remove the middle partition and freely plant your plants in one area.
Another type of usage is that you can remove the bed of the second planter on the side and use it as a single and smaller planter area.
You should set these operations at the cutting stage of the parts.
You will not need to cut more. I will proceed by talking about them during the assembly process.
Assembly Process:
Step 1:
First, we glue the B1(2 x 6 x 45″) side piece to the bottom of the A1(6 – 2 x 2x 13″) piece and screw it in from the back. Here, we do the screwing operations from the top and bottom parts. Thus they do not overlap with the other screws.
I chose a 2 1/2 inch screw as the screw, but if you wish, you can use other screw types that you have at hand, and you can screw size no smaller than 2 1/2 inches.
Step 2:
We repeat the process we did in the first step to use it on the opposite piece. If you plan to use the garden bed with two sections, it is required to repeat this process for the third time.
This will be used for the part on the right.
Step 3:
Now we glue the C1(2 x 6 x 45″) side support pieces, which are the same size as the B1 piece, to the lower side of the A1 foot. We do the screwing operations from the back.
This time, the screws need to be made from the lower and upper part of the part, not from the lower and upper parts, but from a place closer to the lower middle part of the part as seen in the picture.
This is important so that the screws do not overlap each other.
If you are going to make the second side part as well, you should repeat the part assembly operations shown in the picture. In the next stages, it will be an easier joint.
You don't need to do this again, as the middle part will be common to both parties.
We will have built the second compartment by repeating the second floor of the side and front parts in the next steps.
What we need to pay attention to here is that we will screw the C1 side parts of the second part by drilling hidden screw holes.
Step 4:
Now, we paste the parts of the opposite side, which we repeated in the first stage, to the C1 piece from the underside of the A1 legYou should do the screwing operations as shown below.
The screws of the B1 parts should be made from the lower and upper sides, and the screws of the C1 parts should be made from the part close to the middle.
Concealed screwing will be made from the B1 parts in the second chamber to the empty part in the
middle. I will show it in the next steps.
Notes:
It will be easier to stain the garden bed front(C1) 2 x 6 boards separately before you finish assembling the garden bed, especially if you use two different stain colors like.
First, sand the wood with 150 grit or higher sandpaper to achieve a smooth, even surface before staining.
Thoroughly remove all dust from the wood by using a vacuum with a hose attachment, then wiping clean with a damp cloth. then wiping clean with a damp cloth.
First apply Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to the garden bed side 2 x 6 boards.
Apply the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner and allow it to penetrate the wood for just 1-5 minutes, then remove excess conditioner that has not soaked into the wood with a clean rag Apply Water Based Wood Stain to all of the wood.
You can the color Desert Sand mixed for the side(B1) 2 x 6 boards and the color Pure White mixed for the garden bed legs .
What I love about the water based stain is
1) how easy clean up is…
2) how little odor the stain has…
3) the colors.
You can get everything from bold, colorful shades to neutral wood tones to light, creamy cottage and ocean-inspired stains.
Apply the stain using a foam brush, and allow it to penetrate the wood no longer than 3 minutes.
It is very fast-drying, so work in small sections! Wipe the wood with a clean cloth to remove any stain that has not soaked into the wood.
Allow the stain to dry 24 hours before applying a protective finish.
Tip: It will be easier to wear a pair of gloves while wiping the excess stain to keep our hands clean than to wash our hands.
After the stain has dried 24 hours, apply a thin coat of Water Based Polyacrylic (I used the clear matte finish) using a brush.
Allow to dry at least 2 hours, then sand with a very fine 220 grit sandpaper and remove all dust.
Apply a second and third coat, drying and sanding in between each layer. The wood will need 3 hours to dry before handling and 24 hours before it will be fully cured.
If you've ever used a polyurethane on top of white paint and saw the yellow stains that appeared once the poly dried, you know how important it is to make sure you're using the right topcoat.
* If you wish, you can create different beautiful results with your own color choices. I prefer to use these colors mostly for coffee tables. But beautiful colors will look good anywhere.
Step 5:
Now, we glue the B1 pieces on the second floor to the A1 feet as in the first process and screw them from the back. We do the screwing operations from the lower and upper parts of the foot, again using 2 1/2 inch screws.
Step 6:
Now for the second floor, we place the C1 pieces on top of the previous pieces and stick them in the middle of the A1 feet. We adjust and make the screws so that they do not coincide with other screws.
Step 7:
At this stage, we bring the parts of the second section that we have combined before and stick them to the bottom of the A1 feet in the middle. Here we will use a pocket hole screw.
The screw size is 2 1/2 inches, but you can use a 3 inch screw if you want. You can open the hidden screw holes in the C1 parts by leaving a distance of 1 inch from the tip of the side you will screw in. In this way, it will be sufficient to use the screw size of 2 1/2 inches.
The point where you will drill the screw holes should be in the middle of part C1. This is important so that it does not conflict with other screws.
Step 8:
At this stage we have almost completed the garden bed. Now we only have the D1 pieces left to screw onto the feet.
We place the D1 part with 1/2 inch of space from the right, left, front and back and screw it using 2 1/2 inch screws from the top.
We have completed our Project!
