How To Build a Planter Box

The construction of this planter box is simple. It has a beautiful style that suits your living space.

The screws we will use will provide durability.

Building this planter box will be both funny and budget-friendly.

Please read carefully to learn how to make a planter box. 

In this plan, you will have planter box plans, dimensions, and detailed instructions.

Please review them carefully so you will understand when to cut and organize the pieces. 

The planter box-building process starts with legs and supports.

Hardwood or pressure-treated boards are a popular choice, as well as cedar and cypress.

Pressure-treated timber is less stained, durable, and budget-friendly.

1) Starts by checking the list of tools to use for your DIY planter box. After collecting the missing tools, focus on purchasing materials. 

2) Measure and cut all the pieces and prepare them.

Measure the length twice before doing your cuts. Make sure to label each one. 

Tips: Drill pilot holes in wood pieces using a power drill for easy connections.

3) Follow the Project details for assemble the wood pieces. 

4) We will use two screws. 2 1/2" Screw and 2 1/2" Pocket Hole Screw. 

5) You will secure use wood glue to the contact surface. 

6) Fill any gaps and frame nail holes with wood putty. 

7) Sand the entire Project with 150-220 grit or more sandpaper and dust pf prior to painting or staining your finished Project.

B1 - 8 – 2 x 6 x 22″ right and left supports 14'8'' 

C1 - 8 – 2 x 6 x 27″ front and back supports 18' 

D1 - 4 – 2 x 6 x 27″ bottom supports 9' 

E1 - 2 - 2 x 4 x 34″ upper part front and back parts 5'8'' 

F1 - 2 - 2 x 4 x 22″ right and left parts of the top 3'8'' 

Total: 2x4x9'4'' , 2x6x41'8'' , 4x4x8'

Assembly Process: 

Step 1: 

We measure and mark a distance of 2 inches (4 x 4 x 24'') from the bottom of our A1 feet to the top.

Here, the B1 piece will be placed on the innermost part of the A1 foot.

Then we place our B1(2 x 6 x 22'') side support on the marked place and drill and screw our hidden screw holes. 

If you want, you can do the screwing process from the back of the A1 legs by using normal screws. But I chose to use a hidden screw for aesthetic appearance. 

It will be done from the outside side of the B1 piece.

Step 2: 

Now we connect and screw our second A1 leg together with the side support as in the first step.

Again, we measure and mark 2 inches from the bottom of the leg and screw it as in the first step.

Then we do the same operations for the legs on the opposite side, but I will show them in order to be more descriptive in the next steps.

Step 3: 

Here we mark and assemble our C1 (2 x 6 x 27'') front support piece by measuring 2 inches upwards under our A1 leg.

We do the screwing process by using a hidden screw from the outside.

Step 4: 

Now we stick the 3rd leg to our C1 part as in the first process, drill our holes and screw it.

Step 5: 

Now, we assemble our other B1 side support piece, leaving a distance of 2 inches from the bottom of the 3rd leg and screw it from the outside.

Step 6: 

Here, we connect the last leg to the B1 and C1 support parts, as in the previous process, and screw them using hidden screws from the outside.

Step 7: 

Now we will make the lower part of our bed box.

Here we stick our D1 (2 x 6 x 27'') pieces to the B1 side support pieces, starting from the right or left, and screw them from the outside. 

We will do two normal screwing operations on each piece. From the right and left ends of piece D1.

Step 8: 

Now we place the second B1 pieces on top of the lower B1 pieces and drill and screw them using a pocket hole screw from the outer facing parts.

We use 2 ½’’ pocket hole screw.

Step 9: 

Here, too, we place the C1 pieces on top of the previous ones and drill and screw them in from the outside using a hidden screw from the right and left ends.

Step 10: 

We repeat the steps of the previous stage again. We place the B1 and C1 parts on top of each other and screw them from the outside.

Step 11: 

Now we are completing the last side edges of our box planter by doing the same as in the previous operations.

Step 12: 

At this stage, we align the E1(2 x 4 x 34'') pieces up to the end of the feet so that C1 is on the front support pieces and screw them with normal screws from the tops.

You can do the screwing from the upper parts of the feet, from the right and left. We use 2 1/2'' screws.

Step 13: 

Now, we place our F1(2 x 4 x 22'') parts from the level of the B1 parts to the end of the feet and screw them. We use 2 1/2'' screws.

We have completed our planter box project!

If you wish, you can use it as a raised planting bed without adding a bottom panel, thus keeping enough water and nutrients for plants without water accumulation.
